We return for the next edition of OTJF Listening Sessions, this time immersing ourselves in Voodoo, D’Angelo’s landmark album that reshaped the language of modern soul.
Loose, intimate, and radically human, Voodoo blurred the boundaries between neo-soul, funk, jazz, hip-hop, and gospel. Recorded largely live with the Soulquarians and driven by deep pocket rhythms, the album rejected polish in favour of feel, placing groove, breath, and imperfection at its core. From the hypnotic swing of “Devil’s Pie” to the tender restraint of “Untitled (How Does It Feel),” Voodoo remains a masterclass in restraint, sensuality, and musical trust.
This session is an invitation to slow down and listen closely, unpacking the album’s process, its cultural moment, and how Voodoo went on to influence generations of artists while quietly redefining what contemporary R&B could sound like.
