Introducing OTJF & Friends — a new series that lives somewhere between our intimate listening sessions and our late-night parties. Gatherings where we sit with the music, but don’t forget to move with it too.
We’re kicking things off by diving into the timeless genius of Ilaiyaraaja, through Fire Star — the legendary compilation that captures how Raaja reshaped Tamil film music in the early 1980s using synths, drum machines, and electronic textures that were radically new for their time.
This session is a focused, sit-down deep dive into the synth-pop and electro-funk language Ilaiyaraaja introduced to Indian cinema — acid basslines, gliding keys, tight machine rhythms, and melodies that feel both VHS-familiar and strangely futuristic. Heard together, these tracks reveal how Raaja bent pop, funk, and electronics into something entirely his own — a blueprint that continues to echo through Indian film music today.
Guiding us through this world is Julien Dechery — the ear behind cult compilations and mixtapes like Fire Star, Play That Beat Mr. Raja, Warmth In Cool, and Readyaa. Julien’s storytelling approach connects scenes, eras, and moods, letting music unfold like a journey rather than a playlist. We’ll listen to selected tracks in full on a high-fidelity sound system at Cameo, the rooftop bar at the Museum of Art & Photography. After a deep dive, Julien will take us into a DJ set, extending the mood and energy of the music into the evening.
If you love Ilaiyaraaja, oddball film songs, leftfield pop, or that feeling of discovering something magical on the B-side — this one’s for you. There’s going to be intentional listening and carefree grooving, so stick around after the we delve into select tracks from the compilation!

• Street parking and valet service are limited. We strongly encourage guests to use taxi or rideshare drop-offs for the easiest and quickest arrival.
