Talent recognizes talent, always, and nowhere is this more evident than in Hip-Hop and Bollywood. Producers from both circles have borrowed beats and samples from one another, creating timeless hybrids. With our 'Mangoes and Hip-Hop" playlist, we tip our hat to this curious cross-pollination. We explore how producers out west have searched Bollywood's libraries to layer their productions with vibrant Indian melodies and haunting vocals. Singers like Asha Bhonsle, Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, etc. have made their way into the albums of artists like Madlib, Quasimoto, Wu-Tang Clan, to name a few. Even contemporary South Asian hip-hop talent like Das Racist (Heems) & Anik Khan have skillfully embraced their roots, sampling from South Asian Music. As Wyclef Jean once said, "Every hip-hop record got an Indian sample / Do your research." We'll be updating this playlist all week long. Hope you enjoy this one!
